University of Maryland School of Medicine
I am a gerontologist specializing in biobehavioral aspects of aging, and I have extensive expertise in studying older adults, both in community and hospital settings. As Associate Director, and now Director, of the Baltimore Hip Studies (BHS), I have acquired over 20 years of experience in successful subject recruitment and field oversight in a network of 27 hospitals, protocol development, methodological issues related to recruiting and assessing frail older adults. I have led eight cohort studies including more than 3,500 hip fracture patents, and four randomized trials. I was recently Director of the Clinical Coordinating Center for a Phase III multi-site RCT testing two physical therapy interventions post hip fracture. As a result of my leadership, the BHS has gained an international reputation for its ability to successfully conduct research studies with frail older populations and I am often consulted for my expertise and collaboration from both academic institutions and drug companies.
