Dr. James Kurz is the Medical Director of the Milestone Wellness Program for retired NFL players as part of the NFL Players Association Trust. He is also Medical Director of the Carolina Clinic at UNC for Executive Wellness and is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University Of North Carolina School Of Medicine in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Dr. Kurz earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1988, his MD from the University Of Missouri School Of Medicine in Columbia in 1993, and completed his residency training at UNC Hospitals in 1997. Prior to medical school he was a structural engineer on the AV-8B Harrier and F15 aircraft for McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis, Missouri.
Dr. Kurz is a practicing internist at UNC and has been on the list of “Best Doctors in America” since 2008. He has been on faculty in the Department of Medicine at UNC since 1999. Dr. Kurz is a contributing author in Netter’s Internal Medicine and the Second Edition of Netter’s Internal Medicine.
He serves on the Virginia Tech/Carillion School of Medicine Dean’s Advisory Committee. He has been very active in his community as a youth baseball coach, troop advisor for Boy Scouts (has two sons that are Eagle Scouts), Chatham County Board of Health, and volunteers his time as a physician at the Good Samaritan Clinic in the Durham Rescue Mission. He is a member of the American College of Physicians and the North Carolina Medical Society.
Dr. Kurz is married to Lucy Cirocco Kurz, a pediatric flight respiratory therapist with Carolina Air Care at UNC. They have four teenage children age.
