Gary J. Farkas, Ph.D. is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine under the co-mentorship of Dr. David R. Gater and Mark S. Nash. Dr. Farkas received a B.S. in kinesiology from the University of Illinois at Chicago, Ph.D. in anatomy from Penn State College of Medicine, and a Certificate in College Teaching from The Penn State University. He is currently working on a Master’s of Science in Clinical and Translational Investigation. His research examines how obesity relates to chronic, systemic inflammation and cardiometabolic dysfunction after a spinal cord injury, and how exercise and dietary intervention mitigate these complications. Dr. Farkas has published over 30 papers in scholarly peer-reviewed journals and is the first author on my than half. He has presented his work at national and international conferences and is an award-winning researcher and educator with accolades from several local and national organizations. Dr. Farkas has also taught anatomy to graduate, medical, physician assistant, physical and occupational therapy, and pharmacy students, as well as physical therapy residents and resident physicians. Dr. Farkas has received research funding from the UCSF School of Medicine in San Francisco, CA, and the American Association for Anatomy.
