Dr. Edward Ference is a resident physician at the Carolinas Rehabilitation in Charlotte, NC where he currently serves as academic chief resident. Dr. Ference’s career as a physician scientist began at The University of Alabama at Birmingham where he studied the mediation of pathologic stress response in prefrontal-amygdala circuitry following acute medical trauma under the supervision of Dr. Amy Knight. During residency his work had a clinical focus, including presentations on ALS mimickers, autonomic manifestations of diabetic neuropathy, and rare stroke syndromes. He has ongoing work investigating process improvements to prevent life-threatening baclofen withdrawal in patients receiving intrathecal baclofen. Dr. Ference is an active member of the Association of Academic Physiatrists, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and the North American Spine Society. He serves on the Atrium Health Central Division Patient Safety Culture Focus Group and the Carolinas Rehabilitation Medical Staff Quality Assurance Committee. Following residency, he will complete a fellowship in interventional spine at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, NC.
