Dr. Rebecca Sametz is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Masters of Science Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling program at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Dr. Sametz is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC), and certified Employment Training Specialist (ETS). She is currently the Director of Red Raider Pre-College Summer Academy where she developed a week long program for youth with disabilities interested in attending post-secondary education. This program was developed through a partnership with Burkhart Center for Autism Education and Research Center. Previously, Dr. Sametz worked at a non-profit as a Youth Career Development Specialist in which she partnered with local school districts in order to provide youth with disabilities community work experiences who were preparing for transition from school to work. In this role, she also provided career counseling and exploration services to youth with disabilities, job placement and development services, and disability education to employers who served as a placement site for youth with disabilities in understanding the disability and low-cost accommodations. The types of disabilities that the youth were commonly diagnosed with were learning disabilities; more specifically, dyslexia, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), language processing disorder, dysgraphia, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and dyscalculia. Also, Dr. Sametz worked for the State of Michigan’s agency for the Blind and Visually Impaired providing career counseling and exploration services for adults and youth with disabilities, as well as served as a job placement and job developer. Dr. Sametz’s research interests are within the career counseling arena, where she focuses on youth with disabilities transitioning from school to work and adult life; parents of children with disabilities; employer and labor market needs infused within the special education curriculum to best prepare youth with disabilities for the world of work upon graduation.
