Dr. Levinthal is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). He serves as the Director of the UPMC Neurogastroenterology and Motility Center, and is Co-Director of the UPMC Program for Gut-Brain Health, an integrative behavioral-neurogastroenterology clinic. Dr. Levinthal is a clinician-scientist with an NIH-supported research program focused on understanding the neural basis of brain influences on gut function in health and disease. His lab makes use of a range of neuroanatomical and neurophysiological approaches in animal models and in human subjects to study the mind-body connection with attention to brain-gut connections. Dr. Levinthal also conducts clinical research on disorders of brain-gut interaction, such as functional dyspepsia, and gastrointestinal problems experienced by patients suffering from primary neurologic diseases, such as multiple sclerosis. He is particularly interested in stomach disorders, nausea and vomiting, and he has developed specific expertise in the diagnosis and management of cyclic vomiting syndrome.
