Mark A. Hirsch, Ph.D., FACRM is Senior Scientist, Carolinas Rehabilitation, Director Department of PM&R Residency Research education Program, Director Parkinson disease and Movement Disorders Lab , Adjunct Associate Professor University of North Carolina, Charlotte campus, faculty affiliate with the Department of Communication Studies at UNCC and the Center for Biomedical Engineering Systems, UNCC. He is Past Chair of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine ACRM- Neurodegenerative Diseases Networking Group, Co-Chair the ACRM Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (2020-), He completed a Ph.D .thesis on high intensity resistance and balance training in PD from Florida State University (at age 29). He completed National Institutes of Health-T32 fellowship training in neurorehabilitation research at Johns Hopkins Hospital, department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (mentor, Professor Barbara J. deLateur) and in the neurodevelopmental clinic at the Kennedy Krieger Institute with Dr. Alexander Hoon (96-99). He received advanced training in movement disorders in the Department of Neurology at Heinrich-Heine University of Dusseldorf in Germany and trained with Professor Harald Hefter, MD, PhD in the outpatient movement disorders neurology clinic and the Department of Orthopaedics Gait Analysis Lab at Dusseldorf University in Germany. His current research focuses on the neuroplastic mechanisms that link neurotrophic factor expression levels, physical exercise and social networks, mostly in Parkinson’s disease, and applying these insights to the clinic in the context of physical medicine and rehabilitation. Dr. Hirsch has made seminal scientific contributions in the area of exercise and Parkinson’s disease, which has provided great insights into the importance of exercise and physical activity promotion as a clinical first line treatment for Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Hirsch is also known for his pioneering work in the area of Parkinson patient/provider /scientist collaboration. He works with doctors and therapists who want to give patients role in their health care, and he promotes cooperation in the health care system. He calls the system he envisions participatory healthcare. His work on physical activity promotion and brain neurotrophins has been critical in the field of neurorehabilitation. He has published over 60 papers in peer reviewed international journals.
