Specialized Nordic walking poles have been extensively prescribed by therapists in Canada and Europe for gait training, as a dynamic alternative to traditional devices such as canes and walkers and for individual and group seated and standing exercise sessions. Although, Nordic walking is recognized by the World Confederation for Physiotherapy and is the focus of 300 studies published on PubMed, the activity is still a relatively new concept for rehabilitation therapy in the USA. This session will provide an overview of the research with a particular focus on studies conducted with veterans and will include case studies and videos of how specialized Nordic walking poles designed for rehabilitation are being implemented by therapists and physiatrists.
