In 2014 The University of Pittsburgh’s Asian Studies Center developed and supported a travelling exhibition from the Shanghai Jewish Refugee Museum in China which highlighted the history of the exodus of 18,000 Jews from Europe and their immigration to Shanghai during WWII. The interest in, and support of the project within Pittsburgh lead to a partnership between Pitt and WQED Public Television to fund and create a documentary film for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPBS) which is scheduled for release in September of 2020. The film, Harbor from the Holocaust, tells the story of life in the Jewish ghetto of Hankou through interviews with former Shanghailanders, local Chinese who were neighbors in the Jewish ghetto in Shanghai, and family members of significant historic figures who made this exodus possible.
The purpose of this workshop is to highlight how partnerships between university and local/public entities can create significant synergy to expand upon humanities themes, and bring various experts together to create projects that have a national/global impact. Panelist for this workshop will include members of both the university community and the public television realm to discuss the various advantages and challenges to working across fields. The panel will explore the use of original source material in the film and how experts in both fields were able to collaborate to create curriculum related to the subject in a manner that enhances and expands the project to reach multiple audiences in a variety of settings (e.g. K-12, public programming, national television viewers). The workshop will give examples of lesson plans, best practices, and practical advice regarding managing and developing multi-stakeholder projects.
