Session Abstract: With the rise of cyber technology and the increasingly blurring of national boundaries in the globalized world of the 21^st century, migration as a global phenomenon is on the rise, not only in terms of volume, but also in the level of complexity. As a result, the exporting and importing nation-state as well as on the migrant populations themselves have come to be redefined.  The surge in mobility and cultural, social, intellectual, and economic exchange has created new identities and challenged notions of belonging. Southeast Asia is a dynamic hub of such movement and exchange as people move across the borders of its member states and to and from nations abroad.<

SEAC Rising Voices panel this year investigates the new dimensions of migration in Southeast Asia, exploring the various expressions and meanings of identity and belonging among migrant workers and together with ideals and realities of the nation state. Central to these processes are the ways in which the state controls overseas citizens and domestic foreigners, and how that in turn influences the success or failure of national economy. Our panelists investigate a wide range of topics within this theme including transnationalized forms of masculinity of Japanese migrants to the Philippines, the rising sense of national belonging among overseas Malaysians through their participation in the 2018 Malay national election, the unrecognized domestic migrants resulting from an environmental disaster in Vietnam, and the changes in border trade and remittance patterns of Burmese migrants in Thailand with the rise of digital banking.
