Session Abstract: The panel consists of graduate student papers that received best paper prizes from AAS-affiliated regional conferences and were selected by the AAS Council of Conferences to present on this panel. Drawing on perspectives from education, sociology, and history, the papers address a range of topics including cross-national education, war, state-led industrialization, and political exile. Together, they examine the interconnection of self and other, shedding light on identity, change, and conflict within and across borders in Asia. The panel should be of particular interest to students of education in India and the United States, the history of US-Japan relations, the political economy of China, and the Korean diaspora during the Japanese occupation.
