A roundtable discussion on specific AIFIS initiatives launched to promote collaboration among Indonesians and U.S. scholars, as they enhance Indonesian studies across fields and disciplines. Since 2018, AIFIS has sponsored a series of academic writing workshops, led by Dr. Paul Kratoska, and continued its short-term fellowships for U.S. and Indonesian researchers to travel to Indonesia, and the U.S. respectively. In 2020, these initiatives have moved to virtual delivery, including webinar programming by AIFIS fellows and members to promote and publicize scholarship on Indonesia for wider audiences. We propose to invite four key individuals together with AIFIS in-country representative in Indonesia, Dr. Yosef Djakababa, to reflect on these changes and best practices of collaboration, exchange and field-based research on Indonesia, both to evaluate current virtual interaction and delivery, and also plan for a return to international travel and in person programs in 2021-22. What can we learn from adaptations to the COVID-19 era to enhance productive and collaborative scholarship among researchers in contemporary and future Indonesian Studies?
