Zachary M. Howlett is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Yale-NUS College at the National University of Singapore. After completing his BA in German Studies at Brown University, he spent several years in China working as a teacher, translator, and interpreter. He later received MA and PhD degrees in Anthropology from Cornell University. Howlett is a sociocultural anthropologist who focuses on education, mobility, and marriage in China. His forthcoming book is Meritocracy and Its Discontents: Anxiety and the National College Entrance Exam in China (Cornell University Press).
