The widespread use of 3D imaging systems in the last years made them extensively available for visualization of teeth anatomy and their surrounding structures. In endodontics, CBCT has been successfully employed as an assessment method in cross-sectional in vivo studies using large populations to address the influence of epidemiological factors on teeth morphology. On the other hand, micro-CT has gained increasing significance in ex vivo laboratory studies for accurate assessment of the canal anatomy and its influence on different procedures applied to the root canal system. However, although this increasing amount of knowledge has become available to the public, it is not an easy task for dentists to select reliable and useful information from these studies to be used in clinics. Therefore, this lecture aims to present a brief overview of the latest achievements in the research field on root canal anatomy and then focus on how to apply this knowledge into clinical practice.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the common variations in root canal anatomy and state their significance.
Recognize errors that may cause difficulties or failures in root canal treatment owing to lack of knowledge of root canal anatomy.
Identify the influence of morphological variations of root canal in different stages of endodontic procedures.
