Surgery center manager - nursing is her second career Meet Karen Gaskill, who has worked with IU Health for 20 years. Eighteen of those years have been with IU Health Methodist Hospital. Q: How did you become a nurse? A: “Nursing is a second career for me. I grew up on the Southside of Indianapolis and graduated from Franklin Central High School. I received an associate’s degree in nursing from Ivy Tech Indianapolis and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Indianapolis (UIndy). I’m currently working on my master’s degree in nursing administration and leadership. Q: What areas have your worked in at IU Health? A: “I started as a nurse on the orthopedic unit and transferred to Cardiac and Vascular Surgery. In 2015, I became a manager and have managed several departments, all within the Perioperative Services umbrella. I came to Methodist Medical Surgery Center South in January of 2023, where I serve as clinical manager. Q: What do you like best about your current position? A: “Until last year, I’ve always worked at an inpatient facility. Moving to an ambulatory center has been a great learning experience. It has given me a better understanding of the healthcare system. The team at the surgery center is very much a family and I’ve enjoyed becoming part of that dynamic.” Q: How is working in surgery different from other types of nursing? A: “Working in perioperative services is a great career opportunity if your passion is patient advocacy. Our patients are being prepared for anesthesia and may not know the questions to ask or how to communicate their concerns. Then they are under anesthesia, or emerging from anesthesia and are not able to speak for themselves. Teams working in these areas have the great responsibility to ensure our patients are safe and well cared for while they are unable to communicate their own needs or concerns. It’s very humbling to think that another person is trusting you with their life for a period of time, and very rewarding when you are part of a high functioning team that accomplishes that safe delivery of care. Personally: Gaskill has been married for 28 years to my husband, Kelly. They have two daughters, Riley (25) and Olivia (16). She enjoys reading, attending concerts, baking, and traveling. - By TJ Banes, Senior Journalist, IU Health, tfender1@iuhealth.org
