This symposium will provide an overview of chemosensory impairments following traumatic brain injury (TBI) and examine the incidence, etiology, clinical assessment and management strategies including neurorehabilitative interventions as well as neuroprognosis. Issues regarding the functional impact of chemosensory impairments will be discussed including quality of life ramifications, vocational implications and medicolegal perspectives, the latter focusing on impairment rating of chemosensory impairment.
Identify and illustrate chemosensory anatomy and how that anatomy may be perturbed after TBI
Understand methodologies for clinicians to assess olfactory and gustatory impairment at the bedside
Describe the neuroradiological and neurophysiological assessment of olfactory and gustatory impairment
Demonstrate an understanding of the myriad safety issues associated with chemosensory impairment after TBI
Discuss neurorehabilitative measures to address chemosensory loss associated with TBI
