I am a Professor of Psychiatry at UCSD and director of the VA’s PTSD Consultation Program through the National Center for PTSD. I have been the principal investigator on research funded by NIH, VA and the U.S. Department of Defense, and have published over 100 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals. My research is in etiology, assessment, and treatment of co-occurring PTSD and substance use disorders, as well as the development and evaluation of psychotherapy treatments for posttraumatic guilt and shame. I am currently PI of a VA merit grant comparing prolonged exposure therapy with and without topiramate for the treatment of comorbid alcohol use disorder and PTSD. I am also PI of a DoD funded trial evaluating a brief intervention for trauma related guilt and shame to evaluate its efficacy to reduce substance use, PTSD, suicidal ideation, and depression. I have extensive experience in using randomized controlled trial designs with traumatized samples, particularly in recruitment, diagnostic assessment, and treatment. I conducted a pilot study and ongoing program evaluation of using massed PE in residential SUD treatment. These experiences have prepared me well to lead the proposed trial in partnership with Denise Hien, PhD.
