Pediatric Physical Therapist
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta
Atlanta, Georgia
Since 1995, I have served as the physical therapist in Children's Healthcare of Atlanta's Orthotics and Prosthetics department . My main clinical role is to enhance the function of children who receive orthotic and prosthetic devices. As Team Leader of the Limb Deficiency Program, I coordinate care and provide comprehensive evaluations and physical therapy interventions for children with upper and lower extremity limb deficiencies and differences that include children and adolescents diagnosed with solid tumors that require amputations, rotationplasty, and limb sparing surgeries.
As a physical therapist specializing in interventions for children who require prosthetic devices, I have presented nationally and internationally on rehabilitation of children who had amputations and rotationplasty surgeries due to bone tumors. Currently, at CHOA and the APTA Oncology Section, we are working on post-op best practice guidelines for patients following limb-sparing surgeries to include rotationplasty
My research and area of interest focuses on pediatric prosthetics and appropriate application of prosthetic components to foster age appropriate gross and sensory motor development. This has led to numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and latest in publication editions of professional textbooks: Atlas of Amputations and Congenital Limb Deficiencies and Physical Therapy for Children. I advocate for children with limb loss to be as active as possible and try activities that they never dreamed possible. Since 2007, I have provided pediatric programming for the Amputee Coalition’s annual conferences and assisted in the pediatric mobility clinics held during the conferences. Since 1994, has been a member of ACPOC, Association of Children’s Orthotic and Prosthetics Clinics serving on numerous board and committee positions.
I have presented nationally and internally on the Congenital Muscular Torticollis with publications in peer reviewed journals, a recent pediatric text book, as well as a clinical practice guideline posted on the National Guideline Clearinghouse website.
