Matteo Tomasi, PhD, CEO of EYEnexo and Research Associate at Schepens Eye Research Institute (Harvard Med School). I have a broad engineering background, with specific training and expertise in vision research areas. As a research associate at Schepens Eye Research Institute (Harvard Medical School), I developed new skills in testing and developing mobile visual aids including smartphone applications. I received funding for an individual research project on indoor navigation with smartphones using a camera-based approach. I acted as a PI in this project and interacted with both the smartphone industry and Schepens. In 2014, I co-founded EYEnexo LLC (formerly Eyephone), a company devoted to the development of mobile applications for visually impaired and eye care practitioners. I currently serve as CEO, leading product development efforts as well as providing management and administrative functions. Since September 2015, I’m working on an NIH funded study to develop a Mobile Medical Application for detection of Eye misalignment. Currently, I’m PI and primary contact for the awarded SBIR Phase 2. Last September, I received another SBIR Phase 1 funding from NIH to develop a binocular vision therapy based on VR technology. I’m collaborating with the Schepens to test both prototypes. I also achieved good progresses toward commercialization of all the NIH funded products. Eyephone was selected as Phase 2 awardee for the NIH CAP program and later last year our Phase 1 project was selected for the NIH Niche Assessment program and the I-Corps at NIH. In summary, I have a demonstrated record of accomplishments and productive research projects in areas with high relevance for vision science, smartphone applications, and rehabilitation. All the technology developed so far has been piloted and tested in Rehabilitation Hospitals.
