Clinical Research Scientist
Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital
Hines, Illinois
My research focus is neurorehabilitation and neurobiology of cognitive impairment in Parkinson’s disease. I received my PhD in neuroscience from Loyola University Chicago in 2013. A main focus of my graduate research was on the development of an animal model of dopamine agonist medication-induced impulse control disorders in a rodent model of Parkinson’s disease. This work has been presented at both national and international scientific meetings. It has also been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals (under the name of Sandra Rokosik).
I have been conducting clinical research at the Edwards Hines Jr. VA Hospital since 2013.I have completed an RR&D VA Career Develop Award Level 1, and am currently funded by both an RR&D VA Career Development Level 2 Award and an RR&D VA SPiRE Award. My two VA grants focus on non-pharmacological neuroscience-based cognitive rehabilitation clinical interventions that aim to improve cognitive function and daily function in Parkinson’s patients with mild cognitive impairment.
I joined ACRM in 2014 and since then have been active in both the Measure Networking Group (MNG) and Neurodegenerative Networking Group (NDNG). I have chaired the Applied Cognition - Geriatric Taskforce for MNG and continue to work productively with this outstanding taskforce. In 2019, I was honored with the Women in Neurodegenerative Disease Rehabilitation Science Award for NDNG.
