As the SC20 keynote speaker, Prof. Bjorn Stevens of the Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology will discuss how exascale computing is impacting two opportunities that are changing the face of climate science. One arises from what exascale will enable; the other from what it will not.
Stevens was one of the architects of the sixth phase of the coupled model intercomparison project (CMIP6), and he co-conceived and co-led the first-ever intercomparison of global storm resolving models. Through these efforts, and his initiation and leadership of the German national project, “High Definition Clouds and Precipitation for Climate Prediction”, he has helped outline the development pathway for a new generation of climate models.

The TOP500 list of supercomputers serves as a “Who’s Who” in the field of high-performance computing (HPC). It started as a list of the most powerful supercomputers in the world and has evolved to a major source of information about trends in HPC. The 56th TOP500 list will be published in November 2020 just in time for SC20. This BoF will present detailed analyses of the TOP500 and discuss the changes in the HPC marketplace during the past years. The BoF is meant as an open forum for discussion and feedback between the TOP500 authors and the user community.

These talks represent the breadth, depth, and future outlook of technology and its societal and scientific impact. HPC has always played a critical role in advancing breakthroughs in weather and climate research. This year’s invited talks extend this further to data-driven approaches, including biodiversity, geoscience, and climate change. Our speakers will also touch on the responsible application of HPC and new technological developments, to highlight the impact of this potent and versatile technology on a wide range of applications.

The More Than HPC Plenary will highlight the efforts of the community in fighting COVID-19, where HPC and advanced computing play a central role. Four renowned experts working on complementary areas of research and development will briefly introduce their perspective on the topic before engaging in an interactive and passionate discussion.
Prof. Rommie E. Amaro will discuss how biological simulation and modeling using HPC are powerful tools in understanding mechanisms of viral infection and fighting COVID-19. In contrast, Prof. Alessandro Vespignani will discuss the role of epidemiological modelling and prediction in understanding population level dynamics and disease spread. Dr. Ilkay Altintas will cover the role of Big Data and the Internet of Things, and how these can be employed, for example, in raising early alerts. Prof. Rick L. Stevens will look at the problem from an Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning perspective and discuss the transformational potential of these new approaches.

This year's SC Exhibit floor is 100% virtual, offering you the opportunity for unlimited browsing in addition to attending presentations, sessions, and most aspects of SC20.
The SC Exhibits are a great measure of how far we’ve come. In the early days of SC, HPC had only been integrated in a limited way into research or production activities, whereas today there is no aspect of research, development, or the creative process that functions without HPC.
The exhibit floor is a microcosm of HPC-supported activities throughout the world. In addition to browsing the master list of exhibitors and descriptions, take advantage of the two opportunities outlined below.
The Exhibitor Forum offers manufacturers, vendors, and HPC service providers with a venue to deliver technical presentations open to Exhibits and Program attendees. Exhibitor Forum presentations cover a broad range of topics at the forefront of HPC, including cutting-edge hardware, advanced software solutions, and data management infrastructures.
Exhibitor Forum highlights include:
Exhibitor Booth Sessions showcase the latest breakthroughs and product/company announcements from more than 300 international organizations. This is your opportunity to hear directly from company leaders about their future directions, and see newsworthy announcements via pre-recorded, on-demand videos.
Brought to you throughout the conference, the SC News Desk will feature brief in-depth interviews with the area chairs of the conference committee, as well as key leaders and visionaries who will make the SC conference the most important high-performance computing event this year. The free live stream will be available on Facebook Live during the conference.
The SC Conference showcases the best and brightest in HPC, both the rising stars and those who have made a lasting impression over decades of work. A variety of awards honor important accomplishments in the field, from innovative achievements to work of enduring historical impact.
