Dr. Joel M. Billings is interested in building the body of knowledge in fire and emergency services to prevent loss in health and safety. He wants to help bring together research and practice to influence evidence-based decision making. His current research focuses on firefighter sleep quality, fire department shift schedules, fire station alarm systems, and firefighter aging and risk intervention. His goal is to ultimately improve health, safety, and performance of members in the fire and emergency services profession. Dr. Billings graduated from Oklahoma State University in the Fire and Emergency Management Administration Graduate Program with both masters and Ph.D. degrees. His undergraduate degree is in Fire Science from Lake Superior State University located in Michigan's upper peninsula. His professional background includes being a volunteer firefighter and EMT-Basic in Michigan until he pursued graduate education. During that time, he was a Research Specialist at the International Association of Fire Chiefs working closely with Firefighter Safety through Advance Research to translate current research into usable information for the fire and emergency services.
