Fire service agencies face a growing need to represent the diversity of the community. As inevitable changes occur with retirements, resignations and promotions, it is imperative that agencies meet challenge of inclusivity. Targeted, proactive recruitment plays an integral role in the future of inclusive fire service organizations. This presentation will examine practical methods of reducing socioeconomic barriers that limit diversity in the fire service. It will examine a program that incorporates early mentoring and fostering interest; a high school EMT academy; and a sponsorship program that provides a salary to cadets and access a fire service career. This session will give a comprehensive look at a successfully executed program.
The participant will discuss the importance of recruitment on organizational diversity.
The participant will analyze barriers that disproportionately impact those of lower socioeconomic status.
The participant will discuss how to identify and evaluate relevant agency, community and industry data.
The participant will understand how to develop a proactive diversity recruitment program in their home agency.
The participant will be able to explain the positive impact of inclusivity on an agency and justify the development of a diversity plan.
