Generation X and Baby Boomers are retiring at a rapid rate, taking with them their years of experience, expertise, and fire house culture. Meanwhile, one of the hotter topics in the fire service is the idea that the Millennial generation is transient, undependable, and incapable of leading like their predecessors have. This presentation will discuss the characteristics and values of the Millennial generation, while also providing chief officers and leaders with real-world strategies to engage and harness the power of their young leaders. The focus will be on preparing your young leaders to take the reins. Not to necessarily lead like their predecessors have, but instead lead the way the fire service needs to be led today.
Upon completion of the program, the participant will be able to recognize the positive leadership values and qualities of their Millennial workers.
The participant will be able to recognize and select those members of their department that exhibit the qualities needed to be future leaders.
Through discussion and analysis, the participant will be able to apply real-world strategies for engagement with this demographic of their department.
Upon return to their department, the participant will be able to plan leadership development and succession planning around ideas learned in the program.
