Professor Community Health Sciences, Director Center for Research on Health and Aging
University of Illinois at Chicago
Chicago, Illinois
I am a Professor in Community Health Sciences and direct the Center for Research on Health and Aging at UIC. I am currently Principal Investigator of the National Institute on Aging Midwest Roybal Center for Health Promotion and Translation (P30) which is my fifth consecutive Roybal Center grant. Our current Roybal Center focuses on the design and testing of evidence-based health promotion programs for older adults with an emphasis on physical activity, mobility and cognitive health, using fMRI to assess the impact of interventions on brain connectivity. I am also the designer of Fit and Strong! (F&S), an evidence-based physical activity/behavior change program for older adults with lower extremity osteoarthritis (OA). To date, I have tested the efficacy of F&S and tested ways of bolstering maintenance of physical activity after F&S ends (R01 AG23424) (Hughes et al., 2010). F&S has been approved by the Administration on Community Living and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an evidence-based intervention and is now being offered by providers in 32 states. Our Center has a strong track record of working with community-based organizations to test, adopt and maintain evidence-based programs for older adults.
