My education and research involves expertise in qualitative methods and computer-assisted qualitative data analysis. My graduate research involved investigating the experiences of those living with uncertainty as a result of being designated as being at increased health risk, determined through numerically-based health screening. My dissertation research involved investigating the experiences of persons with elevated lipid levels, many of whom were taking statins to manage these levels. In-depth interviews with subjects indicated that the management of a statin regimen had multiple meanings and that the experience of taking medication for an asymptomatic condition often resulted in individual adaptations to clinical therapies.
As Principal Investigator of a VA-funded pilot study to investigate adherence to surveillance in lung cancer screening, I am examining perceptions of risk and intentions to adhere to a complex screening program. As part of this study, I seek to understand patients’ experiences of being screened for lung cancer, which often produces uncertain results through the identification of indeterminate pulmonary nodules. These experiences of uncertainty and vulnerability, and the revised perceptions of risk, influence patients’ capacity for adherence to surveillance of pulmonary nodules or continued annual screening after negative results. My expertise in the study of risk and uncertainty is applicable to the investigation of the potential uncertainty patients experience as a result of ambiguity in treatment decision-making.
