A. Personal Statement
I am a neuropsychologist with the training and experience to serve as a partnering principal investigator on this project concerning the effects of sports related concussion and other causes of traumatic brain injury (TBI) on neurovascular coupling and neurometabolic coupling using high spatiotemporal arterial spin labeling MRI, and computational modeling to quantify oxygen metabolism. The goal of this project is to develop a novel diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for TBI, including sports related concussion. I have directed productive NIH and other federally funded projects on sports concussion, non-sports mild TBI, and more severe TBI which used multimodality brain imaging and neuropsychological outcome measures. These multidisciplinary projects challenged the prevailing clinical practice and had a substantial impact on the direction of research.

2. Our group characterized the acute and long term effects of TBI and the relation to imaging and neurodegeneration. Saliva Biomarkers for Acute mTBI in Children
The goal of this SBIR project is to develop a rapid commercial test for noninvasive diagnostics of mTBI in children. The Phase I research provides proof-of-concept for the core technology: saliva biomarkers with high diagnostic accuracy and specificity for acute pediatric mTBI. This project also evaluates the prognostic utility of the saliva biomarkers for persistent post-concussion symptoms.
