A. Personal Statement
I am the Coordinator of Training & Education for the Research, Training, and Outcome Center (RTOC) for Brain Injury at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana’s comprehensive outpatient Northwest Brain Injury Center (NBIC). I received my MBA degree from Xavier University, a Master’s Degree from Ball State University in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and a Bachelor’s from Butler University in Psychology and Spanish. I am responsible for conducting program evaluation, quality assurance, and fidelity models across several programs and departments at NBIC including Brain Injury Coping Skills (BICS), Resource Facilitation, Couples CARE, and Neuropsychology. My role in the RTOC for Brain Injury involves recruiting for and facilitating groups for research studies, managing BICS operations statewide, and collecting quality and outcomes over time through program evaluation and patient follow-up. Additionally, the RTOC is responsible for ensuring statewide outreach for brain injury education including dissemination of research findings as well as brain injury education and screening. I am an active member of the American Counseling Association. I have co-authored a few referenced publications, and have presented to collegiate and regional audiences.

C. Contributions to Science
Through my research experience and role as Coordinator of Training & Education for the Research, Training, and Outcome Center for brain injury, I have had a direct impact on translational interventions for brain injury survivors in Indiana. Earlier in my career, I assisted in initial studies supporting the efficacy of a Couples CARE (Caring and Relating with Empathy) group and have since helped transition the successfully evidence-based intervention into a service for brain injury survivors and intimate partners in Indianapolis.
Backhaus, S., Neumann, D., Parrott, D., Hammond, F. M., Brownson, C., & Malec, J. (2019). Investigation of a New Couples Intervention for Individuals With Brain Injury: A Randomized Controlled Trial. Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation,100(2), 195-204.e1. doi:10.1016/J.APMR.2018.08.174

I’ve also been managing the operations of the Brain Injury Coping Skills for Resource Facilitation (BICS-RF) statewide groups since 2018. The goal of this specific RF group is to not only provide coping skills to survivors of brain injury and their caregivers, but to also ultimately get survivors back to work. Hundreds of brain injury survivors and their caregivers in Indiana have directly benefited from BICS and the intervention is now being offered at Mayo Clinic. I collect pre- and post-treatment data for each group to assure quality and evaluate the programs.
In fact, I am currently facilitating groups for a project seeking to test the efficacy of BICS in a telemedicine format which would ultimately allow for patients in rural areas to have access to brain injury experts not otherwise available.
We have begun to roll-out BICS-RF via telemedicine, thanks to the payer source – Vocational Rehabilitation – and due to the increased need caused COVID-19 pandemic. We are collecting pre- and post-treatment data for this as well.
Additionally, I have been collecting patient outcomes for the Resource Facilitation program - a statewide service to people with acquired brain injury who want to return to work or school. We collect outcomes at the six, twelve and sixty month epochs.
