Dr. Zina Trost is an Associate Research Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Virginia Commonwealth University.
She received her doctorate in Clinical Health Psychology from Ohio University in 2010, after rehabilitation psychology residency at University of Washinton Medical Center.
Dr. Trost's research and clinical expertise address coping with injury as well as psychological and physical interventions for acute and chronic pain and rehabilitation. Her work examines specific cognitive, affective, and behavioral factors that may contribute to disability or facilitate positive adjustment following physical injury. Her recent work has focused on interventions targeting pain relief and rehabilitation in back pain and traumatic injury, with a focus on Virtual Reality (VR) applications. Her work has received internal, national, and international research support. Dr. Trost has recently executed the 2016 Craig H. Neilsen Foundation Translational Pilot Research Grant to develop the Virtual Walking Interface for Neuropathic Pain in Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). Her research group also recently completed a Department of Defense Spinal Cord Injury Research Program (SCIRP) Development Award to facilitate preparation for clinical trial utilizing the above virtual platform. A multisite Clinical Trial Award to test the virtual walking intervention was awarded September 2020 and will commence in the fall. Dr. Trost is also the recent recipient of an Australian government award to examine the virtual platform as a method to restore physical sensation individuals with discomplete spinal cord injury.
