Randy Trumbower, PT, PhD is Director of the INSPIRE Laboratory at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. He also is Co-Director of the Spinal Cord Injury Division and Assistant Professor within Harvard Medical School’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Dr. Trumbower is trained as a physical therapist and an engineer with advanced degrees in both. He completed postdoctoral training at Northwestern University and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago in neurophysiology and mechanics. He received his MS and PhD degrees in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Connecticut, as well as, his MS and Physical Therapy degrees from Duke University. Prior to joining Spaulding & Harvard, Dr. Trumbower held joint faculty appointments as Assistant Professor in the Departments of Rehabilitation Medicine & Biomedical Engineering at Emory University & Georgia Institute of Technology. He also served as Director of Research within Emory’s Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. Dr. Trumbower’s research interest is on the study of endogenous mechanisms of spinal plasticity and novel treatments that target these mechanisms to restore function in persons living with life-long paralysis such as spinal cord injury. His research is funded by several federal and private foundations.
