Robert Scales, Ph.D. is the Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Wellness in the Department of Cardiovascular Diseases at Mayo Clinic in Arizona and he is a volunteer Clinical Professor at Arizona State University. He joined Mayo Clinic in 2008 as an exercise physiologist and in his administrative role he has provided leadership in the development of a cardiology-based initiative that is designed to prevent heart disease and related conditions. This includes a partnership with primary care to conduct medically-directed exercise physiology consultations that promote the American College of Sport’s Medicine’s Exercise is Medicine global initiative. His primary research interest is the application of motivational interviewing and effective provider-patient communication in the healthcare setting. Dr. Scales is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, a Fellow of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, an advisory board member of the International Concussion Society and a task force member of the Athlete Development and Sports Rehabilitation section of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine.
