A clinical neuropsychologist by training, my research program has focused on the cognitive and emotional consequences of traumatic brain injury (TBI) across levels of severity. As the project director of the National Institute of Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR)-funded Moss Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems (Moss TBIMS), I oversee enrollment and data collection for a large regional database of individuals receiving inpatient rehabilitation for TBI, who are then followed longitudinally at post-injury-years 1, 2, 3, and 5, and every 5 years thereafter. As part of the Moss TBIMS, in addition to the longitudinal database and local program of research, I oversee knowledge translation projects that put me in close contact with brain injury rehabilitation clinicians—such as the development and evaluation of a protocol for better management of inpatients during the transient confusional state known as post-traumatic amnesia (PTA). My research has also been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Pennsylvania Department of Health, and the Defense Advanced Projects Agency (DARPA). Ongoing projects include the examination of individual patient-factors that influence recovery trajectory after moderate to severe TBI—including better characterization of white matter injury using novel neuroimaging techniques. I also have a particular interest predicting persistent dysfunction following mild TBI, which effects approximately 15-30% of cases. A number of my current projects leverage mobile technology to bring greater granularity and personalization to TBI assessment and rehabilitation.
