Body of Abstract: Disorders of consciousness (DOC) are complex states that survivors of severe brain injury can experience and was through to be historically a poor prognosis. However, recent long-term outcome studies demonstrate those with traumatic DOC can achieve better functional outcomes and quality of life than previously thought. That is why it is imperative for medical and rehabilitation professionals to understand the potential of patients in DOC to provide skilled, appropriate interventions and recommendations to facilitate a positive trajectory of recovery. This one-day course will provide comprehensive learning opportunities addressing the domains of DOC care. The day will offer an overview of recently published DOC Practice Guidelines. Content will facilitate application of the Guidelines into practice. An in-depth examination into the domains of DOC assessment, diagnosis, confounders to assessment, medical management, and prognosis will be provided. Evidence-based long-term DOC outcomes will also be covered. Case studies will be utilized in interdisciplinary group discussion to facilitate best practice treatment concepts in the application of the Guidelines and domains discussed. Case studies will be designed for attendees to develop and interdisciplinary plan of care and road map to recovery for the severe brain injury survivor experiencing DOC. Primary objectives of this instructional course are to provide in-depth content related to DOC care and programming, provide an environment for interdisciplinary discussion, collaboration and problem-solving to promote evidence-based, quality care to the DOC population and their families.
