Abbreviated Description: Given the complex nature of chronic pain – both physiologically and psychologically – chronic pain-management strategies often require a multidisciplinary approach. To summarize the successes and shortcomings of current medical and rehabilitation models in addressing chronic pain, our 6-part presentation will explore biopsychosocial and integrative approaches to chronic pain management. We will discuss the concept of suffering in the context of chronic pain management, and summarize the prevalence of chronic pain both nationally and globally and describe physical and psychosocial contributors to pain. Presentations will include: Pain and Sensitization, Cultural Aspects of Pain and Suffering, Acute to Chronic Pain Transition, Pain and acupuncture, Exercise as management of pain, and Integrative Solutions for the Veteran with Chronic Pain: Harnessing the Mind to Heal the Body

Learning Objectives:

• Understand scientific and cultural bases for biopsychosocial and integrative models in treatment of chronic pain
• Identify socioeconomic disparities in the prevalence of chronic pain
• Discuss how Veterans are taught to take responsibility for their body and to self-manage pain.
• Utilization of the process to improve QOL
