This presentation will share findings from Shepherd Center’s research exploring the effects of peer-to-peer support in helping patients and their family caregivers successfully transition home after inpatient rehabilitation following traumatic neurologic injury. Attendees will be able to understand the importance of transformative learning to successful recovery and coping after catastrophic injury, the role of social learning in the effectiveness of peer-to-peer interventions, and how to identify effective strategies for improving self-management to rescued health complications after discharge from inpatient rehabilitation. Discussion will focus on the relationship between self-efficacy, effective management of care needs, and fewer health complications following discharge from inpatient rehabilitation. Caregivers will share their lived experiences and provide insight on the journey of taking on the role as a caregiver to a loved one with acquired brain injury.
