Family members and friends caring for individuals living with dementing illnesses (caregivers) benefit from clinically-focused psychoeducational programs aimed at developing skills, knowledge, and attitude and promoting a sense of competence (mastery). This symposium will describe how one such evidence-based program (the Savvy Caregiver) accomplishes this, and it will describe how a new Roybal Center will highlight the heterogeneity of caregiving situations and provide pilot support for projects designed to promote caregiving mastery within those situations.

Learning Objectives:

Describe the underlying constructs of a successful psychoeducation program for family caregivers
Incorporate these constructs into ways of strengthening their own practice with such caregivers
Appreciate the heterogeneity of dementia caregiving situations
