Value-based reimbursement demands improved patient adherence. However, motivating patients to adopt a healthful treatment plan provides a major challenge for clinicians. Motivational interviewing is a strategic method of communication that has demonstrated success with patients that are ambivalent or not ready to change. Skillful application provides the platform for patients to talk about change instead of exhibiting dissonance. Consequently, clinical consultations will not only be more effective, but also less frustrating. The seminar will combine a didactic presentation that is supplemented with video demonstrations in the clinical setting.
Learning Objectives:
Recognize ways in which patient resistance (dissonance) is exhibited during clinical consultations.
Define the goal, mindset and primary objective of MI.
Identify the key components of motivational interviewing and how they can be used to lower dissonance and promote behavior change.
Learn how to practice the skills of MI independently or in small groups.
