The clinical research evidence for music and rhythm-based interventions in neurorehabilitation has seen rapid progress in the past two decades.  However, underlying brain mechanisms addressing impairment and plasticity are much less researched. This symposium proposes to address this gap by presenting our recent research addressing neural mechanisms underlying music perception, cognition, and production, which have shown to effectively translate into clinical practice. Furthermore, these findings may open up new avenues for clinical applications. For this purpose, the symposium will consist of four presentations under the shared umbrella of clinical brain mechanisms in music and rhythm. We will present new data in Parkinson’s disease [PD], Stroke, Alzheimer’s disease [AD], and Traumatic Brain Injury, including imaging results of dopamine and intracellular basal ganglia responses in PD, and neural networks underlying long-term musical memory formation in AD. New RCT data on sonification in stroke rehabilitation will also be presented.

Learning Objectives:

• upon completion participants will be able to identify brain mechanism for clinical applications of music in Parkinsons disease, Stroke, Alzheimer;s disease, and Traumatic Brain Injury
• Learn results of recent clinical trials in stroke and Therapeutic Instrumental Music Playing (TIMP)
• upon completion participants will be able to understand the neuroscientific foundations of Neurologic Music Therapy
