Depression following stroke in a leading concern and requires interprofessional approaches and investigation into treatment effectiveness. This presentation will share results from a recently completed dissertation on active music therapy for mood elevation following stroke during acute hospitalization. Additionally, this presentation will review related literature and discuss clinical applications. For example, clinical decision making to individualize treatment. Consideration will be given to the role of music therapy as part of an interprofessional team.

Discuss the role of music therapy in acute stroke care in relation to mood and depression.
Consider the neural basis for music in mood modulation/regulation and identify underlying neural mechanisms.
Discuss with patients, families, and administrators at least one benefit of receiving music therapy following stroke.
Understand appropriate referrals, clinical decision making of a music therapist, and benefits of music therapy treatment.
