This symposium, presented by an inter-disciplinary panel of faculty, will provide an overview of historical evolution of biofeedback, as well as recent and ongoing research findings related to the use of biofeedback for post-stroke gait rehabilitation. We will also discuss the advantages and examples of incorporating game-based interfaces for post-stroke gait training. Upon completion, the participants will be able to define biofeedback; list the therapeutic rationale and clinical advantages of biofeedback as a promising intervention for post-stroke gait training; provide a historical perspective on the use of biofeedback for post-stroke rehabilitation; describe the motor learning mechanisms underlying different types of biofeedback, including commonly used verbal instructional feedback; summarize research evidence pertaining to the effectiveness of biofeedback for rehabilitation of post-stroke gait dysfunction; list advantages of incorporating game-based interfaces in stroke gait rehabilitation; discuss challenges to clinical translation of gait biofeedback; as well as avenues for future research.

Learning Objectives:

• Define biofeedback, list the therapeutic rationale, motor learning mechanisms, and clinical advantages of biofeedback as a promising intervention tool for post-stroke gait training.
• Describe the motor learning mechanisms underlying different types of biofeedback, including commonly used verbal instructional feedback, on therapeutic effects of gait training.
• Describe evidence related to the effects of verbal instructional feedback during post-stroke gait training
• Provide examples of the applications of game-based interfaces in stroke gait rehabilitation
• List advantages of applying game-based interfaces during stroke gait rehabilitation; List the challenges to clinical translation of gait biofeedback, as well as opportunities for future research related to gait biofeedback.
