Deputy Portfolio Manager

Dr. Melissa Mehalick is a Deputy Portfolio Manager for the Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology Disorders Portfolio for the Military Operational Medicine Research Program (MOMRP) at the US Army Medical Research and Development Command (MRDC). Dr. Mehalick earned her PhD in Research Psychology with concentrations in neuroscience and health psychology from Washington State University. After completing graduate school, she commissioned to the US Navy to serve as a Research Psychologist in the Medical Service Corps, and was stationed at the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) in Silver Spring Maryland. During her time as a naval officer, she conducted research examining the physiological and behavioral effects of blast induced traumatic brain injury (TBI) in animal models, as well as blast TBI effects on the gut microbiome. Upon finishing her naval tour, she remained at NMRC as a staff scientist to investigate the effects of aeromedical evacuation on polytrauma (e.g.,TBI, hemorrhage). Dr. Mehalick also has extensive research experience studying pharmacological management of chronic pain, and opioid tolerance. In her current position as Deputy Portfolio Manager, Dr. Mehalick assists with the oversight of Army- and Defense Health Program-funded research on mitigation of PTSD in Active Duty Service members and Veterans. She helps support the Portfolio Manager and the MOMRP Director in strategically guiding and managing research aimed at developing capabilities and evidence-based solutions to mitigate Warfighter PTSD and other psychological health issues to maintain readiness. The portfolio primarily includes research investigating PTSD mechanisms, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and implementation studies in the Military Health System.
