I am a practicing emergency medicine clinician in a Level I trauma center, and have successfully completed a research fellowship in emergency neurosciences as well as an MPH degree with a focus in behavioral science and health education. My clinical research is focused on traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the emergency department and athletic settings. I was the lead investigator in a multicenter study funded through the U.S. Department of Defense evaluating a novel technology (DETECT) for rapid, and objective identification of neurologic impairment in the acute period following a suspected concussion. Building off this effort, I also led a pivotal project jointly sponsored by the National Football League (NFL) / General Electric (GE) / UnderArmour to further develop the DETECT technology to provide a multimodal concussion evaluation platform, and assess its potential role in acute mTBI screening in competitive athletes. I have also participated in several Neurologic Emergencies and Treatment Trials (NETT) studies including RAMPART, ALIAS, POINT, ESETT, and SHINE; and was a co-investigator in the ProTECT III clinical trial evaluating the role of Progesterone after moderate to severe TBI. Finally, combining my clinical and public health interests, I am the co-leader of the TBI task force for the Injury Prevention and Research Center at Emory - a multidisciplinary collaboration of academicians and community stakeholders focused on reducing the incidence and burden of traumatic brain injuries in Georgia. I am also leading a ongoing study to evaluate Georgia legislation aimed at curbing concussion in youth sports.
I am highly motivated to combine my emergency care clinical expertise, research experience in complex, multicentered acute trials, and public health interests to promote and facilitate the development, translation, and implementation of high quality clinical trials to advance the management and outcomes of patients suffering from acute illnesses and/or traumatic injuries.
