Dr. Roach’s background in Urban Sociology given her an ecological perspective to her research with a special interest in bringing about positive behavior change by changing the belief and value systems of patients. social structure. In addition, my work with persons with chronic disease and persons with SCI has given me the opportunity to explore the importance of shared medical decision making among under representative groups.
Over the course of her research career she has had the goal to engage and include patients, clinicians and community organizations all phases of the research process. A recent example of this was a wiki I developed to bring together the SCI community and researchers. Together this group defined ten areas of research they felt were important to both persons with SCI and the clinicians who care for their healthcare needs.
In addition to research, Dr. Roach has co-taught an innovate SCI course that brings together in one classroom 1st and 2nd year medical students, bio-medical, physical and occupational doctoral students. This course teaches not only the medical aspects to SCI, but the impact SCI has on the whole life and those around them has. The course can do this by having expert SCI clinicians and SCI consumers involved in each class meeting.
