As a scientist and speech-language pathologist, I am driven by my long-term goal to improve the communication and social outcomes of individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI). My training is in the field of communication sciences and disorders with a focus on the cognitive and communication effects of neurologic injury. My research is focused on the functional communication of adults with TBI and the cognitive processes that support communication. Through this work I have documented cognitive-communication effects of TBI in adults, and have provided evidence of the social impact of TBI-related communication impairments. I have begun to build on this work to investigate the communication strengths and challenges of older adults with TBI. Further, my training as a certified speech-language pathologist has given me important perspective into the clinical practice issues related to the rehabilitation process and communication needs experienced by individuals with TBI and their families.
