Associate Research Scientist
Tim & Caroline Reynolds Center for Spinal Stimulation, Kessler Foundation
West Orange, New Jersey
Dr. Fan Zhang is an Associate Research Scientist in the Center for Spinal Stimulation at Kessler Foundation in New Jersey and an affiliated Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Rutgers, New Jersey Medical School. He received his Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University in 2015. Dr. Zhang’s primary research interests include rehabilitation, human physiological signal processing, neural-machine interface design, wearable rehabilitative robotic control, machine learning, and biomedical instrumentation. His current research focuses on applying advanced technologies of spinal cord transcutaneous stimulation to neuro-modulate spinal networks and enhance motor and sensory function restoration after spinal cord injury. His doctoral research mainly concentrated on understanding and investigating human sensory-motor control system, developing innovative neural-machine interfacing technologies, and applying these techniques to the neural control of rehabilitative and therapeutic robotics, such as prosthetics. To date, he has published over 30 high-impact journal articles and conference papers in the field of biomedical and rehabilitation engineering. His long-term goal is to successfully translate these innovative rehabilitation technologies into clinical practice, and eventually improve the quality of life of people with physical disabilities.
