Assistant Professor

I am a Clinician Scientist with a unique background in both Hispanic patient care and Hispanic aging research. I have a track record that speaks to my ability to establish collaborations with clinicians and investigators from multiple disciplines to analyze health disparities in different countries in Latin American and among Hispanics in the United States. My work focuses on cognitive impairment and geriatric conditions that affect quality of life in older adults. I also focus on health disparities among Hispanic older adults. I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Geriatrics and the Sealy Center on Aging in the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). I have experience in the diagnosis and management of older adults with Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias (ADRD). In the clinic, I care for persons with dementia and devote a significant amount of time working with a multidisciplinary team to support them and their families. Because of language, cultural and socioeconomic barriers, Hispanics usually face more challenges when navigating the healthcare system and getting the help needed to improve quality of life.
