Adjunct Professor, Stanford University; Co-founder, Stroke Forward
School of Education
Portola Valley, California
Debra Meyerson, previously a tenured professor at Stanford University, taught about diversity, gender, identity, and organizational change. She is the author of Tempered Radicals (HBS Press, 2001) which examines how people who are "different" can advance important changes from within organizations, and leadership practices that foster inclusive organizations.
In September 2010, Debra’s life was upended by a severe stroke that nearly killed her and initially left her paralyzed on the right side—and without any speech. Years of intensive therapy enabled Debra to regain her independence, but she still lives with physical limitations and speech challenges. Debra wrote Identity Theft: Rediscovering Ourselves after Stroke (Andrews McMeel Publishing, May 14, 2019) to help other survivors and those closest to them navigate the emotional journey that she has found very difficult—and rewarding. With her husband, Steve Zuckerman, she co-founded in 2019 Stroke Forward, a nonprofit that will provide survivors, families and caregivers with more resources to help them navigate the journey to rebuild their identities and rewarding lives.
Prior to her stroke, Debra was Associate Professor at the Stanford University Graduate School of Education (GSE) and (by courtesy) the Graduate School of Business (GSB). She was faculty co-founder of the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society (PACS) Among other things, Debra co-developed the Masters program in Policy, Organization, and Leadership Studies (POLS), directed the joint masters in Business and Education, served on the University Faculty Senate, and was affiliated faculty for the Michelle Clayman Institute for Research on Gender. Debra received her B.S. and M.S. from M.I.T. and a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Stanford University. Debra continues to live in Menlo Park with her husband Steve, and has three adult children.
