Short Bio Erwin van Wegen
Dr. Erwin van Wegen is associate professor at the Rehabilitation Medicine department of Amsterdam University Medical Center, Location Vu University Medical Center.
He is (co-)responsible for strategy and policy with regard to the scientific research in the neuro-unit of the department. Together with the other research staff, he initiates new research projects and supervises PhD students and students in their research. His research over the years has focused on the coordination of locomotion and standing balance as well as rehabilitation and recovery of motor function in movement disorders, specifically in Parkinson’s Disease (PD), stroke, MS and the elderly.
Dr. van Wegen has gained experience in conducting multicenter trials and was co-promotor in 8 completed PhD projects (as of august 2019). Within current projects he acts as project coordinator and co-promotor /supervisor of 8 PhD students who’s projects are aimed at understanding early prognosis and longitudinal change in neuroplasticity and functional recovery after stroke, development of rehabilitation interventions and technology, e-health and self-management and ambulatory monitoring of physical activity in patients with stroke, Parkinson’s disease and MS.
Many current collaborations exist nationally and internationally. Dr. van Wegen has several teaching duties at the Faculty of Behavioral and Movement Sciences, is boardmember of the Dutch Society for Neurorehabilitation, is Director for Program Rehabilitation and Development of the Amsterdam Movement Sciences Research Institute (http://www.amsterdamresearch.org) and serves on several organizing committees for international conferences on Neurorehabilitation (www.neurorehabrepair.eu; https://www.iaprd-world-congress.com).
