Dr. Cathrin M. Buetefisch MD, PhD is a Professor at the Department of Neurology at Emory University and the Director for the Deep Brain Stimulation Clinic in the Movement Disorder Clinic. She has secondary faculty appointments in the Departments of Rehabilitation Medicine and Radiology and is a teaching faculty member of the Neuroscience Program.
Dr. Buetefisch received an MD from the Free University of Berlin, Germany and PhD (Neurophysiology) from the Heinrich Heine University Duesseldorf, Germany. She trained in Neurology at Free University of Berlin, Germany and West Virginia University, Movement Disorders at the National Institutes of Health and Neurorehabilitation at the Heinrich Heine University, Duesseldorf, Germany. She then joined the West Virginia University faculty in the Departments of Neurology and Physiology. Dr. Buetefisch has been at Emory University since 2010.
Dr. Buetefisch is a neurologist and neuroscientist internationally recognized for her work in neurorehabilitation. Her work contributed to the understanding of motor cortex plasticity, mechanisms underlying recovery of motor function after stroke and the development of effective rehabilitation treatment strategies using non- invasive brain stimulation. In 2003, she received the Hannelore Kohl Award, Kuratorium ZNS, the most prestigious award for neurorehabilitation research in Germany. As a researcher she directs a laboratory in motor system neuroscience at the Center for Rehabilitation Medicine in Emory University. She has a long- standing research interest in the study of mechanisms underlying recovery of motor function after stroke and the development of rehabilitation treatment strategies that are based on neurobiological principles to enhance it. Her research is funded by the NIH-NINDS and NICHD.
