Abiodun Akinwuntan is the Dean of the School of Health Professions, Professor of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, and Professor of Neurology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Dr. Akinwuntan received his doctoral and master’s degrees in neuromotor rehabilitation from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Catholic University of Leuven) in Belgium, master’s degrees in public health and business administration from Augusta University in the United States and a bachelor's degree in physical therapy from the University of Lagos in Nigeria.
Prof. Akinwuntan is a world-leading authority on the use of virtual-reality technologies to improve daily living activities in neurologically impaired persons. He developed the first truly portable driving simulator (US Provisional Application # 62/689,494) and reported the first-ever randomized controlled trial on the use of a driving simulator to improve driving after stroke. Prof. Akinwuntan served on the Medical Expert Panel on Stroke and Commercial Truck Driving of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and is a member of the Simulation Measurement of Motor Vehicles Operator Performance Committee of the Transportation Research Board of the United States. Prof. Akinwuntan has collaborated extensively on several funded grants totaling more than $14 million, mostly as the Principal Investigator, authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts mostly in reputable journals with high impact factors, and mentored over 50 doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows.
Prof. Akinwuntan is a recipient of the prestigious United States Fulbright Scholarship, which he meritoriously completed in Nigeria in 2014 and was consequently named to the Fulbright Specialist Roster in 2015. He was awarded a 2016 Fulbright Specialist Award to Iceland and currently serves as a member of the four-person peer review committee for all Fulbright grant applications to West and Central Africa. Prof. Akinwuntan has been the Editor-in-Chief of the Nigerian Journal of Medical Rehabilitation since 2010 and in 2019 was appointed as an Academic Editor of PLOS ONE Journal and a member of the Editorial Board for the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Journal.
